A statement on your most significant contributions to this research field
Richard Nile is Professor of Australian Studies and Director of the Australia Research Institute at Curtin University of Technology. He has widely recognised credentials and a proven track record of significant research in the field of Australian cultural history. Nile has been successful in attracting competitive grants and consultancies and has been significantly involved in large-scale research collaborations, productions and project management. His most recent books are The Making of the Australian Literary Imagination (UQP 2002, short-listed for the 2003 Western Australian Premier's Award) and, as general editor, the six volume cultural history, Australia: the Common Culture (forthcoming 2004). Nile has published several other books (with a range of national and international publishers: UQP, OUP, Andromeda Oxford, UWAP, Fremantle Arts Centre Press, Wayland, University of London, Penguin) and around fifty scholarly articles/chapters. The CI and senior-author of Cultural Atlas of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific project (published by Andromeda Oxford), Nile has been centrally involved in several other large-scale research projects on Australian Culture (variously published by OUP, Penguin and UQP), in addition to The Encyclopaedia of Censorship (OUP), Nations of the Twentieth Century (Andromeda Oxford), and the Oxford Companion to the Second World War (OUP). Nile is highly regarded for his innovative work on Australia's literary culture. His major contribution to Western Australian cultural history is his co-authored and edited volume The Gate of Dreams (Fremantle Arts Centre Press), with Ffion Murphy

Other evidence of impact and contributions to the field
Nile has edited and contributed to more than 25 book length volumes of the Journal of Australia since 1996, co-edited with David Walker Australian Cultural History (1998-2002), and is editor of the book series UQP Australian Studies and of Symposia. He is the co-founder of the API Network and its various publications including, New Talents 21C, Creative Arts Review, JAS Review of Books, and Journals Australia. In 2002/3, he founded the Australian Scholarly Classics imprint initiative utilising print on demand technology. The founding director of the Woodford Institute, he became co-chair of the Perth International Writers Festival in 2002. Richard Nile is the inaugural chair of the Western Australian Writers Centre, incorporating the Fellowship of Australian Writers, the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers Centre and the Peter Cowan Writers Centre. He has held academic appointments at the University of New South Wales (1983-1987), University of Western Australia (1988-1989), University of London (1989-1992), University of Queensland (1993-2000) and Curtin University of Technology (2000-) where he was appointed Professor and Director of Australian Studies in 2000.
